Visit from Maud Blair
We were very lucky to have Maud Blair come into Sawston Village College recently to speak to both our pupils and staff about her experiences of British rule in Rhodesia (Zimbabwe). We heard first hand about how extreme attitudes were to race in Rhodesia as Maud was sent to a boarding school at the age of four and not able to have any contact with her family for three years. Our pupils asked some really interesting questions about Maud’s life in Zimbabwe and were able to gain a better understanding of the impact and legacy of the British Empire today. After school, staff were also invited to hear Maud speak in our Professional Learning discussion group, on the really important subject of how to tackle the issue of race in the classroom. She gave us some extremely valuable insights and staff commented on how useful the session was in moving our thinking on race forwards.
