SVC wins Swavesey Science Challenge for the 2nd year running!

SVC pupils triumphed once more in the Swavesey Science challenge winning against 19 local schools. Mrs Haddow the organiser said, ‘I may need to ban you next year!’ Our pupils came first in the physics section of the competition with full marks. Their overall score of 49 out of 60 gave them a very clear lead over Linton Village College, whose team came second with 46 and Longsands’ team who gained 45. The judge who was a Materials Scientist from a local scientific company was incredibly impressed by all of our pupils but most especially by the analytical skills of one of our boys. He was only sorry that he wasn’t old enough to be offered a job! The winning team was Suzie Parkhill and Freddie Barnes from Y7, Alison Jackson and Luke Fitzgerald from Y8 and Emily Davidson and Jesse Campion Loth from Y9.

physics_comp_027_286This is the second consecutive year that Sawston has won the competition and follows closely behind another win at the Gifted and talented Physics decathlon for Year 9 pupils. There were 19 schools from all over East Anglia which included the King’s School Ely, The Leys and The Parkside Federation. The end of the competition was incredibly tense with two teams vying against each other in a timed tie-break competition. The winning team was Michael Middleton, Alex Kerr, Eleanor Parkhill and Emily Davidson. In order to win, our students had to present an aspect of Science they had encountered over the day – and what a brilliant job they did of it! Congratulations to all students involved and many thanks to Mrs Munden, Mr Brown, Dr Young, Mrs Kerr and Mrs Bennett for organising and supporting these events.
