KS3

Throughout years 7 - 9, all pupils use the National Numeracy Framework to cover the content of the National Curriculum for Mathematics. This ensures both consistency in the transfer from KS2, and coherent preparation for GCSE courses in KS4. The Key Maths series of books provide a structure for both class and homework.
Pupils are set in this subject, initially based on information given in the KS2/3 transfer process, but eventually as a result of a series of regular tests completed by the whole cohort. These results are use to monitor progress and adjust setting where appropriate, either to reward progress or to support difficulties. Teachers use additional tests to help pupils assess their own progress. Each year group is divided into 8 sets, which range in scope from stretching the most able to encouraging those who find this subject difficult. A Learning Support Assistant is usually available to help these latter pupils.

KS4

All our pupils work towards a GCSE examination and continue to be taught in ability sets. The highest two sets take Higher level, middle sets study for intermediate level, and lower sets take Foundation level. Lower Sets are usually smaller and benefit from the presence of a Learning Support Assistant.
The main areas of study remain the same as in KS3 with the addition of Using and Applying Mathematics, but there are differences in the methods of assessment. There are different syllabuses available which place varying amounts of emphasis on coursework and terminal examination. Coursework is usually set and completed during lessons and homework over a two-week period. Internal assessment takes place at regular intervals throughout year 10 - 11
